5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Hiring A Designer
Thinking of hiring a website designer but not sure where to start?
Here’s 5 questions you should ask yourself before reaching out to potential designers:
What do I want my website to do?
What do I want my website to look like?
How involved do I want to be in the process?
What’s my budget?
What’s my timeline?
I know that even contemplating a website redesign can be overwhelming, so let’s take those questions one at a time.
1. What do I want my website to do?
What’s your number one goal for your website? To sell products? To sell services? To grow a community? Having a clear vision of what you want from your site will make the design process go more smoothly.
2. What do I want my website to look like?
I know what you’re thinking, isn’t it the designer’s job to figure that out? And yes it’s true that the right person will help bring your vision to life, but it still has to be your vision. Before you hire someone take the time to look at other websites to figure out what you do and don’t like. This will give you some ideas when it comes time to start discussing your new site with potential designers.
3. How involved do I want to be in the process?
Each designer’s process is different, so you’ll need to find one that’s a good fit for you. To do that you’ll need to figure out how involved you want to be in the process. Are you looking to be completely hands off or would you prefer a designer that keeps you in the loop every step of the way? There’s no wrong answer. It’s whatever works for you. Knowing what you want will really help as you choose which designers to connect with, and as you make your final choice.
4. What’s my budget?
Although budget shouldn’t be your only concern, it should definitely be a consideration as you choose a designer. A starter website will be less pricey than a fully custom site with all the bells and whistles. Figure out what you’re comfortable spending then look around for a designer that would be a good fit.
5. What’s my timeline?
How much time do you have before your desired launch date? Our general timeline is 2-3 weeks, some designers take less time, some longer (up to 3 months). It all depends on how complicated the project is.
Bonus Question: How ready are you to move?
Before talking to prospective designers you should ask yourself how ready you really are to move on your project. Is this something you want to start this week, or is it something you’re considering doing 6 months down the line?
Knowing how ready you are will also help you as you narrow down your choices. If the designer you love isn’t ready for 3 months and you know you’re ready to move now, then you’ll have to look for other options.
